How does an NDIS referral work?
What happens from the moment a Support Coordinator or family member sends a referral through to supports starting.
Sending a referral
A referral usually comes from a Support Coordinator, a family member, a representative, or the participant themselves. Only the information needed to assess suitability should be shared at first.
What the provider does next
The provider reviews the referral, checks availability in the participant's area, and contacts the referrer to discuss the request. Suitability is always assessed by people, not automated systems.
Starting supports
If the request is a good fit, the provider confirms services, days and times, prepares a service agreement, and agrees a start date. If it is not a fit, a good provider will say so quickly.
